VARSITY VOLLEYBALL MOVES TO 8-3 WITH MHS TOURNEY TROPHY
KEENAN GARRETT
Edition:Wednesday, September 01, 2010

The first-place trophy of the Mustang High School volleyball tournament went to the host team Saturday with a 3-1 win over Lawton.
The Broncos moved to 8-3 on the season after they won three out of four matches in the tournament. Head Coach Beverly Adams' squad beat Harding and Mount Saint Mary and lost to Southmoore in pool play. They advanced to the final round of the bracket with a semifinals win over Westmoore.
Junior outside hitter Jordan Cox slammed a total 13 kills out of 29 attacks in the championship match. She was the only player who had double digits in total points with 16. Senior Courtney Chestnut led defensively with 13 digs in the finals, followed by Cox's 11. The game scores against Lawton were 25-19/25-16/19-25/25-20.
“They (Lawton) looked pretty good. I think they got tired near the end. They had a lot of matches Friday, so they probably just all caught up with them,” Adams said.
The semifinals match against the Jaguars looked almost identical to the season opener at Westmoore, which the Broncos won 3-1 after dropping the third game. In both meetings, Westmoore won game three by two points, this time 26-24. The Broncos finished strong Saturday with a 25-17 win in game four.
The Broncos spread out the defensive effort against the Jags with Cox and Chestnut digging 18 shots apiece. Senior Megan Leissner registered 13. Cox had 11 kills out of 34 attempts against Westmoore. She led the team in match points with 11.
“We usually get mad at each other, but we didn't do that,” Cox said. “We just had a good tournament because we just stayed up the whole time and kept playing our game.”
Southmoore took Mustang to the maximum amount of games Friday in the last game of pool play. The teams traded off wins in the first four games with the Broncos winning game one 25-11 and game three 25-22. The Sabercats won their first two games by only two points before claiming the match 15-9 in the final round.
After losing game one against Mount Saint Mary, Mustang bounced back to win three straight Friday. Total kills and individual points were in the single digits for the Broncos, but Cox, Leissner and senior middle blocker Jessie Harrison each had three aces.
The first match of pool play against Harding was not surprisingly an easy shutout for the Broncos. Harding's match high in points was six with a 20-point loss in the first game and getting goose-egged in game three. Leissner landed 13 aces in 30 serves.
Mustang's No. 5-ranked varsity team will host a triangular match today against No. 3 Edmond Santa Fe and No. 7 Putnam City. The event will begin with freshmen matches starting at 1 p.m. in the Wellness Center.
